My breath caught in my throat. At first, I couldn’t tell if it was indignation that they’d gotten the same rewards we had after killing Bawbag or annoyance that rewards were repeated, but after a moment, I shook my head ruefully.

This was good news. I still didn’t know what the throne was, but the spirit well? The communication beacon?

Those things meant something vital: we could reach out to Fukuoka, on the other side of the planet.

I scanned through the rest, feeling hope burgeon in my chest. Fukuoka wasn’t alone. Maasai people in Tanzania had somehow purified bloody Lake Victoria in the African Great Lakes. Nyanza, as it was called in the local Kinyarwanda language, had long been a water source for the highlands of Eastern Africa between Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but the ascension had given the people what they needed to enshrine it into legend. The second largest lake on Earth, apparently, by surface area—now it would do far more than hydrate.

The list kept going; no continent would be unreachable. Not even fucking Antarctica, whose international community of isolated scientists had, of all things, built their own communication beacon without a bloody blueprint. A legendary feat in itself.

By the time I snapped out of my screens, feeling almost drunk with what had to be the euphoric antithesis of the pre-ascension doom scroll, the schooner had just rounded the northern tip of Kerrera and skimmed into Oban’s harbour.

I’d almost—but not quite—forgotten what we were returning to.

For all the hope my notifications had beamed into my brain, it didn’t change the immediate danger as reality crashed back into the forefront of my mind.
